Dedicated to Grandma June-Don't worry Grandma-We will find you!!!!

Through The Years!!!

IN MEMORY OF GENE ROBERTSON

Grandpa Gene & Grandma June have quite a Legacy...

Thursday, May 14, 2009

Dear Shellee,

Thank you for allowing me to part of your service for your Grandpa Gene. I hope that I provided some stories that added to the service. I thought that all of the Robertson's organized the event just exactly as Gene would have wanted it. He loved all of his grand kids and he certainly loved his shooting, regardless of where he was.

I will look for the picture of your Dad from the 1962 CA Sate Shoot with a lot of the CA sub juniors and junior shooters against whom he competed (and often beat).

I trust you had a safe trip home. Say hi to your Mom for me and also thank her for thinking of including me. I was proud to be a part of the ceremonies.

Regards,
Jim

Shellee:

Thanks so much for the link to the Robertson blogspot. It is great. You and your family did a great job with this Memorial.

Thanks Triple B!

April 11, 2009 - Memorial Service for GENE ROBERTSON
What a perfect day for Grandpa Gene's memorial service. It was at Triple B Clays in Sunny California. It started with a 21 gun salute "Grandpa Style". 6 trap shooters and Scott each fired 3 shots (with shotguns - of course) then the US Marine Corp retired a flag for him. We all sat around and told funny stories about Grandpa- it was a great way to remember and celebrate the good times he shared with us on the earth.

Scott shared with everyone how he knew "...Grandpa was on post 1 and Dad was on post 2 now" It must have been some reunion when he was able to be with Dad again. He also said that Grandpa taught him how to win and how to lose. I know that there were a lot of shooters that were able to say good bye to Grandpa Gene that day.

The only thing missing was our sweet grandma. WE LOVE YOU GRANDMA JUNE AND PRAY EVERYDAY THAT YOU ARE SAFE AND WELL!
It was unfortunate that she couldn't come to share in the memorial of her husband, she was married to for 66 years.

Here are some funny stories shared by some that loved him.

I can think of lots of good memories of Grandpa Gene. All of them include hunting or trips to Bob's Big Boy. He seemed to like that place. One memory that is kind of funny happened on one of my first hunting trips with him. We were duck hunting out at the Bakersfield club. He kept yelling "Mark, Mark" and I remember thinking what the heck is he calling me Mark for, doesn't he know my name? Anyhow, I am just a dumb kid from Idaho so I did not realize that Mark meant a bird was in range coming my direction. It is pretty funny to think about now. He was such a great man to me and was the only grandpa I knew on my fathers side. I grew to love him as a grandfather just as my dad loved him as a father. I will always be grateful when I think of my dad, a 13 year old boy who's father had died after a long battle with bone cancer, and how Grandpa Gene stepped into provide for my father opportunities and experiences that only a father can teach a son. I know that my life has been blessed in ways that cannot be measured because of Grandpa Gene. I better go before I cry all over this keyboard.

Went goose hunting with Scott and Grandpa. Had to dig my own blind with Grandpa at 4:30AM, yes in the morning. Freezing rain and snow. I went to the back of the truck to pull out something or another and the dogs were in the back also. One smell of those dogs, and I started gagging and so on. I think Grandpa wanted to kill Scott for bringing a girl. We had alot of fun...that is the weekend that we found out Raegan was on her way.

Always came with one suitcase, packed and sealed with duck tape.
Gave me the best bean soup recipe ever.
Caught the duck blind on fire and told Scott to "pee" on it.

I miss going to pass-shooting in West Texas.
I will miss Monday night phone calls, or Tuesday morning, "I forgot to call Grandpa last night."

Grandpa didn’t have a radio in his gray truck. Scott and I thought it was weird so when we asked him about it he would say. I have a radio, what do you want to listen to? Weather? Then he would touch the empty space on the dash board like he was changing the station. Then he hit the imaginary button again singing at the top of his lungs “Oh SOLO MIO!!!! Scott and I told him to turn the radio off.

I have great memories of Bob’s Big Boy with coffee and extra blue cheese dressing and of course "Jerome's".

Lots of silver dollars that came from behind our ears.

He had the LOUDEST sneezes in the entire world- still to this day I have never heard anyone sneeze louder.

He loved very few things in the world – Grandma June, Ken Robertson, his kids and grandkids, the old El Monte Gun Club and the Duck Club.

Flying into L.A.X I said to myself, "Well Grandpa you finally got me back here." I had forgotten how amazing it was to have family. My cousins were a sweet surprise to otherwise bitter circumstances. Those two days shared with Scott, Shellee, Chelsea and Christi were precious. Eating at "Jeromes" was priceless. It reminded me of my morning ritual to breakfast at Denny's with Grandpa. The Grand Slam was my favorite breakfast staple and Grandpa Gene always had his coffee. I think that's why I now refer to my coffee as having 75% creamer and 25% cup-of-joe. My view of Grandpa was a loving, stubborn man who told the greatest version of Goldi-locks and the Three Bears. Thank you Grandpa for all the breakfasts at Dennys, trips to Thrifty's ice cream and for teaching me the expression "ding-bat". Most of all, thanks for loving me. -
